Family Medicine Doctors Help Collect Gift Cards and Rolls of Quarters for Housing Hope

Western Washington Medical Group (WWMG) Family Medicine is pleased to announce that it will host a gift card and rolls of quarters drive for Housing Hope of Everett during the month of March. Members of the public who would like to donate a gift card or coins can drop them off at the Silver Lake Medical Center at 12728 19th Avenue SE, Suite 300, Everett, WA 98208, across the street from the Silver Lake Elementary School. Or call 425-225-2755 to learn more.
“We had such a great response to the Toys for Tots drive,” remarked Carla DeWolf of Western Washington Medical Group Family Medicine, “that we decided to host several charity drives throughout the year.”  She went on to remark that Housing Hope was chosen because it provides safe, decent, and affordable housing for struggling families.  “We support the work that Housing Hope does in the community and we recognize that emergency shelter, transitional housing, and critical services are needed in this difficult economy.  I believe that the Silver Lake and surrounding community will support this in a big way.”

Gift cards of $10-25 will be used to purchase program supplies for Tomorrow’s Hope Childcare Center and College of Hope. These programs support homeless families with the resources and tools they need to become self-sufficient.  The gift cards will also be given to homeless families when they move into a shelter to provide basic need items, food, or gas, and also help the specific needs of homeless children.  The rolls of quarters will provide money to do a load of laundry—something we consider so basic but something that can be so difficult for a homeless family. Every load costs $2.50 and four loads a week can really add up. For the homeless, it might be a financial impossibility without help.
Grocery store cards from Safeway, Albertson, QFC, and department store cards from Fred Meyer, Wal-mart and Target are Housing Hope’s greatest need items and with help from the community, they can be used to change the life of a homeless family. You can learn more about Housing Hope at www.housinghope.org.

Itching – Information on Itching

Author: peterhutch

Itching may be caused by a skin disorder or by a disease that affects the whole body (systemic disease). Skin disorders that cause severe itching include infestations with parasites (such as scabies, mites, or lice), insect bites, hives, atopic dermatitis, and allergic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. These disorders usually also produce a rash. Systemic diseases that can cause itching include liver disease, kidney failure, lymphomas, leukemias and other blood disorders, and, occasionally, thyroid disease, diabetes, and cancer. However, itching from these diseases usually does not result in a rash.

Itching can be best described as a peculiar tingling or uneasy irritation of the skin that creates a desire to scratch the affected area. Itching is a common problem faced by many people at some or the other point in life. Itching could be the result of a variety of reasons such as allergies (to food, plants or pets), insect bites, stings, skin disease or even poor hygiene. Itching can be annoying as the skin is irritated and gives you the constant need to scratch the affected area. Constant or repeated scratching can bruise the skin, making it sore and even painful. Itching could be generalized where in the whole body is affected or localized wherein a particular area is irritated.

Moisture from sweat or diarrhea may cause itching. If the anal skin stays wet, the skin begins to break down. Some foods irritate the anus when they are expelled during a bowel movement. The most common culprits are caffeine, chocolate, beer, nuts, dairy products, and spicy food.

Itch originating in the skin is considered pruritoceptive and can be induced by a variety of stimuli, including mechanical, chemical, thermal, and electrical stimulation. The primary afferent neurons responsible for histamine induced itch are unmyelinated C-fibers. In human C-fiber nociceptors, two major classes exist: mechano-responsive nociceptors and mechano-insensitive nociceptors. Mechano-responsive nociceptors have been shown in studies to respond to mostly pain and mechano-insensitive receptors respond mostly to itch induced by histamine. However it does not explain mechanically induced itch or when itch is produced without a flare reaction which involves no histamine.

Itching is an uncomfortable irritation of the skin that causes a desire to scratch the affected area. It is a very common symptom and may affect any area of your body. You can often see a rash or a spot where it occurs. Women in the menopausal transition may experience vaginal itching due to fluctuations in estrogen levels. As estrogen levels decline in the perimenopause, the vaginal wall becomes thinner and drier, and itching may result. Some studies have shown a link between psychological stress and vaginal yeast infections. This is likely due to the fact that stress is known to have a negative effect on the immune system and could possibly increase the likelihood of getting a yeast infection.

Infections and infestations of the skin are another cause of itch. Common infectious causes of itch include a fungal infection of the crotch (tinea cruris) commonly known as jock itch, as well as vaginal itching and/or anal itching from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or other types of infections. Another type of parasitic infection resulting in itch is the so-called swimmer's itch. Swimmer's itch, also called cercarial dermatitis, is a skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to infection with certain parasites of birds and mammals that are released from infected snails in fresh and saltwater. Itch may also result from skin infestation by body lice, including head lice and pubic lice. Most people who have itching, however, do not have a serious underlying condition.

3 Hypothyroidism Diet Tips For Your Dieting Success

Author: Karen

Have you been on a hypothyroidism diet but not losing any weight? Or have you just found out that you're hypothyroid and you're afraid that you'll gain a bunch of weight? Read on and I'll tell you how you can potentially stop any weight gain or kick start your diet program and start losing weight.

Diet Tip #1.

For starters, you need to maintain proper thyroid levels that are conducive to weight loss. This might seem obvious but many people take this for granted. You need to ensure that you are on hormone therapy and that your hormone levels have stabilized. Without this, most of your effort to lose weight will be in vain. Not to mention that if left untreated the complications due to hypothyroidism can be serious.

Diet Tip #2.

Boost your metabolism. By its very nature the main side effect of being hypothyroid is that of a slow metabolism. By boosting your metabolism you are taking steps to do for your body what it can't do naturally for itself. There are a number of ways in which you can boost your metabolism that you can take advantage of. One way is to exercise, plain and simple. Get to the gym and perform some muscle building and cardio exercises. Another way is to eat smaller portions at meal time but eat more often. By eating 5 - 6 small meals throughout the day has the effect of keeping your metabolism stoked up. This one tip alone could be enough to give you and your hypothyroidism diet the jolt it needs to get moving again.

Diet Tip #3.

Make a plan and stick to it. With a proper diet and exercise program you'll be able to shed those pounds and improve your health and general well being. One of the initial side effects of hypothyroidism is depression. By exercising and eating correctly you can avoid this often debilitating condition.

Additionally, don't get caught up in the game of chasing your weight. Too many people, me included, can't resist the urge to look at the scale every day. Don't do it! You'll only get discouraged if you do. Your weight will fluctuate and this is especially true for people with hypothyroidism. If you must track your weight check it only once a week and try to check it on the same day every week, like every Monday morning before eating anything.

Raising of Children Up to the Age of Five was the Number One Medical Concern of the Middle Ages.
Did you know that back in the Middle Ages, mothers had a difficult time raising healthy kids because some of them could not even reach the age of five? What made young children particularly vulnerable during those times were infections, injuries and birth defects which may not have even been named during those times.

Since there were no pediatrics back in the Middle Ages, it become a grave medical concern to raise children up to the age of five, simply because there were no means of taking better care of such young

Too Many Americans Skipping

Colon Cancer Screening

FRIDAY, March 2 (HealthDay News) -- Approximately one in three U.S. adults between the ages of 50 and 75 who should be screened for colorectal cancer have not been, according to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
As National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month kicks off, the society is reminding older adults about the benefits of a colonoscopy exam to screen for colorectal cancer, which is largely preventable, while offering tips on getting screened.
"Colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable cancers because the majority of colorectal cancers arise from precancerous growths in the colon called polyps, which can be found during a colonoscopy screening exam and removed before they turn into cancer," Dr. Gregory Ginsberg, president of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), said in a society news release.ASGE experts say everyone should be screened starting at age 50, and repeat the screening once a decade thereafter if the initial test results come back normal.
Those with a family history of colorectal cancer should get screened starting at age 40. Other high-risk groups, such as black people and those with inflammatory bowel disease, should discuss getting screened sooner with their doctors.
Before the screening, it is important to follow pre-colonoscopy instructions carefully to ensure the colon is thoroughly cleaned so no polyps or cancers are missed during the procedure, Ginsberg said.
Studies suggest that not following the prescreening guidelines results in more missed polyps.

Enlarged Thyroid

To contact us Click HERE
For those people affected by either hair loss or hair thinning there may be many possible causes behind the visible symptoms. One of the potential causes is thyroid related. To be more specific, an enlarged thyroid or goiter may be the cause of your hair loss.

Since there could be many reasons why you are experiencing hair loss, it is always wise to get a correct diagnosis from a medically trained professional. In that way, you can ensure that you take the right steps to treat the underlying medical cause and so prevent any further hair loss or thinning.

Many of us have heard about the thyroid gland but apart from that may not know too much about it or what its function is. Your thyroid gland is a small organ that sits around the front of the throat, in the same area as your voice box. This organ is essential to normal body growth during the early stages of your life and later on helps govern the body’s metabolism.

You have probably heard or read about under-active or overactive thyroid glands. This is where the thyroid organ is still functioning, yet is classed as not working according to ‘normal’ levels. As your metabolism defines the rate at which your body absorbs energy, an under-active thyroid gland has been linked to cases of overweight adults.

An enlarged thyroid is a condition that tends to affect more women than men. Precisely why this is so is not yet clear, yet it is known that the cause tends to be a deficiency in iodine. It is also a condition which tends to be become more common in the older generation. However in most people an enlarged thyroid does not cause any problem and is generally not uncomfortable.

Usually a simple blood test is all that will be needed in order for your doctor to ascertain if you have an enlarged thyroid, or if your hair loss is the symptom of something else. Of course what that ‘something else’ could be is a myriad of conditions that can require further tests.

If you are diagnosed as having an enlarged thyroid which is contributing to your hair loss you’ll be pleased to hear that treatments are effective and simple. However, the downside is that you will need to continue the treatment for the rest of your life. If you do stop, then the symptoms will begin to reappear.

A survivor tells her story

To contact us Click HERE
My name is Barb and I live and work in the Everett, WA area.
This is the true story of my fight with colon cancer.
When I was 31, I had some issues with irregular bowel movements and bloating. My abdomen felt swollen and extended at times and then I started having some pressure type discomfort in my tailbone area, as well as discomfort during sex. So I went to my primary care doctor and he started tests, including a colonoscopy.Within five days, I was diagnosed with colon cancer and admitted for surgery. After that healed, I had six weeks of radiation.
A colonoscopy is not done in the most fun area of the body and many people don't want to deal with it. But the prep is not that big of a deal and its much better than the alternative could be. I’ve had cancer surgery and two additional surgeries plus the effects from having radiation. All this has taken a toll on my body and it’s hard to imagine why someone would want to go through what I’ve gone through.
I come from a large family and since my cancer diagnosis, my entire family goes in for their colonoscopies. My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer 5 years after me. I have brothers and sisters who have had polyps removed.
As a result of having colon cancer, I have multiple medical issues that sometimes make me feel much older than I am and I get frustrated at times.. The cancer, surgeries, and treatments have heavily impacted my body and the kind of life I live, but I am so thankful to be alive.
Cancer doesn’t discriminate. Get your colonoscopy and make sure that you’re cancer free.

Feeling Depressed, Might be Your Thyroid

Author: MJ Jensen
Hypothyroidism is a very common problem with thyroid related illness and can cause you to have low energy, concentration problems, it can affect mood and cause you to gain weight. If you have chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia, I would suggest that this is one of the first things you should have checked. But there are some particularly telling but little known signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism that some doctors, and even fewer patients, are aware of, but can help lead to the correct diagnosis.

Hypothyroidism is very often associated with hair loss. You may notice a heavier-than-normal loss of hair from the head. Even body hair, including underarm and pubic hair may shed or thin. This sort of hair loss can be due to a thyroid problem, but it can also show up with other hormonal imbalances, illnesses, age, and due to genetics and heredity.

If you have any unexplained hair loss, and especially, if you have loss of hair from the outer edge of your eyebrows, it's time for a thorough thyroid evaluation from a knowledgeable practitioner. But one type of hair loss is considered unique to hypothyroidism. It is the loss of the hair in the outer edge of the eyebrows. This is a characteristic sign of hypothyroidism, and is not linked to other diseases.

Many people have elevated cholesterol levels, and doctors are becoming more aggressive about recommending treatment. Often for borderline-high levels, doctors recommend a trial of diet and exercise to get the numbers down and back into balance. If that doesn't work, or if the numbers are especially high, doctors may recommend cholesterol-lowering drugs, most commonly, the statin drugs, like Lipitor.

Undiagnosed, untreated hypothyroidism can make elevated cholesterol resistant to treatment. Despite diet, exercise and prescription medications, cholesterol levels may remain high, confounding doctors and patients alike. Generally, if you have high cholesterol, you should always have a thorough, comprehensive thyroid evaluation to completely rule out hypothyroidism before taking cholesterol-lowering thyroid medications. And if you are on cholesterol-lowering drugs that aren't working, definitely talk to your doctor about your thyroid.

It's one of those topics we often don't want to discuss, but persistent or chronic constipation can be a sign of an under-active thyroid. Because the thyroid regulates metabolism, the metabolic slowdown of hypothyroidism also slows down the digestive system, and food moves more slowly through digestion and elimination, frequently resulting in chronic constipation. Often, common remedies such as increasing water intake, fruits like dried prunes or prune juice, upping the fiber intake are tried, with no results. Over-the-counter, herbal and prescription drugs may also fail to resolve the problem. If you are experiencing chronic constipation, you should always be exhaustively evaluated for an under-active thyroid.

Many women consider loss of sex drive as an unavoidable part of getting older, but it doesn't have to be that way. Low or no sex drive may actually be a sign of undiagnosed, untreated hypothyroidism in some women. If you have a problem with your libido, any medical workup your doctor does to evaluate you should also include a complete thyroid examination, to rule out low thyroid as a potential cause. There are even suspicions of infertility related to hypothyroidism.

As many as 21 million Americans some 9.5% of the population age 18 and older have a mood disorder, including major depression, dysthymic disorder (milder, longer-term depression), and bipolar disorder. Depression and mood changes can be a symptom of untreated low thyroid. And unfortunately, some of the millions of people diagnosed and treated for depression and mood disorders are actually suffering from undiagnosed hypothyroidism.

There is no blood test for depression, so diagnosis is made based on a discussion of the symptoms. But thyroid disease diagnosis requires evaluation and testing, and so with today's 5-minute doctor visits and managed care cost containment, mood-related symptoms are quickly attributed to depression, and a prescription written for antidepressants or antianxiety medications, rather than a more time-intensive thyroid evaluation, and the cost of bloodwork to test the thyroid.

While some thyroid patients can have a separate mood disorder that also warrants treatment, it's essential that everyone diagnosed with depression or other mood disorders be fully evaluated as early as possible to rule out any underlying thyroid imbalances.

When you request a test be prepared to tell the Doctor you want to test your TSH, T3 and T4 at the minimum. Most Doctors only test for TSH which is a weak base line to use for testing.

Using Herbs to Treat Hypothyroidism

Author: samnickel6

Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an overactive thyroid gland and increased circulating levels of thyroid hormone. In general, hyperthyroidism is more common in young adults between the age of 20 and 40, and is found more often in women than in men. Clinically, the patient will exhibit signs and symptoms such as increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, moist skin, perspiration, nervousness, increased appetite, weight loss, insomnia, diarrhea, weakness, thickened skin, bulging eyes and confusion, Enlargement of the thyroid gland and protrution of the eyes are two diagnostic symptoms that required additional workup to confirm or rule out a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.

The use of herbs has been extremely helpful in the treatment of hypothyroidism and there are a number of herbs available in the market that can be combined with the diet recommended by the doctor. However, all herbs are not beneficial for the treatment of this disease and some can even cause an increase in the severity of this ailment.

Herbs play keyrole in bringing thyroid gland in normal position. One of the best herbs is Fucur vesiculosis. This is a sea vegetable that contain natural iodine. Avena sativa is another herb that is used to help curing various nervous disorders as it is the best nervine tonic. In hypothyroidism, depression and anxiety is common and therefore, Avena sativa can help calming the mood and restoring the brain chemistry.

Some of those Chinese herbs include Fritillaria, Arnemarrhena, Oyster shell, Scrophularia that effectively treat hyperthyroidism. They have properties to dissolve extra lumps and also to reduce the inflammation. Chinese herbs also reduce sympathetic excess signs and symptoms those are the main features of hyperthyroidism such as increased heart rates, increased blood pressure, tremors and many more.

Gentian (Gentiana officinalis). Herbal pharmacologist Daniel Mowrey, Ph.D., author of The Scientific Validation of Herbal Medicine and Herbal Tonic Therapies and an herbalist I respect, says that gentian "provides bitter principles known to normalize the functioning of the thyroid." He suggests gentian as the main ingredient in his own thyroid formula, a combination of gentian, red pepper (cayenne), Irish moss, kelp and saw palmetto. If I had hypothyroidism, I would not hesitate to take this combo.

Bugleweed (Lycopus virginica) and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) help to normalize an overactive thyroid. Steep the following amount in one cup of boiling water. Strain and cool. For bugleweed, 1 - 2 g. For lemon balm, 2 tbs. These herbs may be combined.

These methods that are used in homeopathy in treatment for hypothyroidism are prepared from a wide range of substances such as vegetables, herbs, minerals, chemicals and animal products in extremely minute doses. And then, if the time comes that the patient is ready to use the homeopathy treatment for hypothyroidism, the remedy will be selected based on all the symptoms of the patient including physical, mental and emotional states, and family history of the patient. If you are skeptical, be assured that homeopathic remedies are known to be safe and effective, stimulating the body’s own immune system that can offer a long lasting cure rather than having a temporary relief.

Thyroid Nodules

Author: james sameul

Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck, just below your Adam's apple — about where you'd put a bow tie. Weighing less than an ounce, the thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate every aspect of your metabolism, from your heart rate to how quickly you burn calories.

Simply put, thyroid nodules are lumps which commonly arise within an otherwise normal thyroid gland. Often these abnormal growths of thyroid tissue are located at the edge of the thyroid gland so they can be felt as a lump in the throat.

Thyroid nodules are very common. A nodule is a swelling or lump, which can be a solid or liquid filled cyst or mass. Most are benign, but a small percentage can be cancerous. So you should always have a nodule evaluated by your physician as soon as you notice it. An estimated one in 12 to 15 women and one in 50 men has a thyroid nodule More than 90 percent of all thyroid nodules are not cancerous.

Thyroid Nodules Symptoms

Difficulty swallowing if the nodule is positioned such that food has difficulty traveling through the upper portion of the esophagus to the stomach
Pain is only rarely associated with thyroid nodules

In addition to these symptoms, several complications can result from a thyroid nodule. For example, a thyroid nodule may produce excessive levels of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism), causing symptoms such as nervousness, weight loss, and a rapid heartbeat. Diarrhea may also occur due to the hormones that are secreted by medullary thyroid cancer cells.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors:

Thyroid nodules are growths of cells in the thyroid glands. These growths can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Some nodules are fluid-filled (cysts), while others are completely made of thyroid gland cells. Sometimes, what feels like one nodule will actually be a collection of small nodules close together.

Most thyroid nodules are benign growths caused by cycles of hyperplasia (increaed cellular activity) and involution of underlying thyroid tissue. This process results in the fusion of regions of colloid-filled follicles and parenchyma, forming what is called adenomatous or colloid nodules.

Treatment

Treatment of thyroid nodules depends on the nature of the nodule as revealed by these two tests. If the nodule is "warm" and the biopsy does not show malignant cells, it can be safely assumed that the nodule is not malignant. However, if the scan shows a "cold" nodule and the biopsy shows that the cells are "suggestive of malignancy" then the nodule must be removed

Thyroid hormone therapy
If part or all of a thyroid gland is removed, hormone therapy medication is necessary to replace the thyroid gland hormones that can no longer be produced. In this case, a synthetic form of thyroid hormone must be taken daily for life. This type of hormone therapy is considered safe and causes few side effects

Thyroid scan: Your doctor may order a scan of your thyroid. You swallow a small amount of a radioactive substance, and it travels through the bloodstream. Thyroid cells that absorb the radioactive substance can be seen on a scan. Nodules that take up more of the substance than the thyroid tissue around them are called "hot" nodules. Hot nodules are usually not cancer.

You have several nodules (multinodular goiter) and surgery is not a good idea because of other health problems you have. Radioactive iodine can shrink nodules that cause problems with breathing or swallowing, but your nodules may come back after treatment.

If your thyroid nodule is causing hyperthyroidism, your doctor may recommend a dose of radioactive iodine, which usually comes in a liquid that you swallow. Your doctor may have you take medicine (antithyroid pills) for a few weeks to slow down the hormone production.
